DTE Energy last week announced it would procure 1.5 GW/6 GWh of energy storage systems from LG Energy Solution Vertech at a cost of $1.6 billion, with the batteries manufactured in Michigan and deployed over the next two years. DTE serves Detroit and has 2.3 million electric customers in Southeast Michigan. The batteries will be utilized in eight storage projects. DTE estimated they will generate $2.3 billion in total economic impact “while creating good-paying jobs in Michigan, improving grid reliability and meeting the state’s clean energy goals.” The storage projects will be used to reduce strain on the electric grid and “decrease the need to start and stop generation as demand fluctuates,” DTE said in the May 27 announcement. DTE has been building out its storage capabilities, in part to meet growing demand from data centers. Michigan regulators in December gave conditional approval to a contract for DTE to serve an Oracle data center, with Oracle covering the full cost of its energy and capacity needs. The utility is also awaiting approval from the Michigan Public Service Commission for a 1 - GW Google data center deal. The utility highlighted its efforts to build a local supply chain and grow the state’s economy. DTE said it spent approximately $2.9 billion with Michigan-based businesses last year, “reinforcing local supply chains, creating local jobs and supporting companies that are essential to building the state’s energy infrastructure.” In total, DTE invested almost $4 billion in 2025 and has seen significant improvements in customer reliability, the utility said. DTE’s deal with LG Energy will bolster community employment “while driving responsible growth, improving reliability for our customers and investing in clean energy solutions,” DTE CEO Joi Harris said in a statement. The eight DTE battery storage projects will support about 1,800 jobs at LG Energy Solution’s manufacturing plant in Holland, Michigan, and more than 350 additional jobs across construction and operations, the company said.
