NORTHEAST — Today, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Vermont
sued
the Trump administration over the U.S. Department of the Interior’s $1 billion buyout of TotalEnergies’ offshore wind leases, a move that led the company to abandon its U.S. offshore wind projects in exchange for doubling down on fossil fuel investments, including LNG exports in the Gulf.
In response to the states’ lawsuit, Sierra Club Senior Advisor Nancy Pyne released the following statement:
“The Trump administration’s move to buy out TotalEnergies’ offshore wind leases is yet another politically motivated and illegal attack on clean and affordable energy, family-sustaining jobs, and billions of dollars in supply-chain and infrastructure investment. We applaud the states for taking Trump to court.
“These states recognize what this administration refuses to accept: Offshore wind lowers energy costs and strengthens our grid. Trump’s backroom buy-outs are a bad deal for families already struggling to pay their bills.
“We stand with the states fighting to protect a clean energy future that is already delivering jobs and economic growth across the Northeast. We urge more states and clean energy developers to take a stand against Trump’s relentless moves to prop up the fossil fuel industry and sink clean energy — the law is on their side, and so is the American public.”
